Tangled, a challenging twist of Steve Stoll’s Minimal Techno and Jeff Green’s cello excursions, showcases 2 improvised live performances and 4 composed studio tracks. An unusual yet exciting symbiosis of manipulated cello and drums, groovy and atmospheric. The combination works well and the album is made up of two long live recordings from performances in Fort Wayne and Detroit as well as a number of shorter pieces. Unsurprisingly the main flavour is pure techno – as I’d expected – although it’s tempered with a dark, moody ambient feel which shares some common elements with his work on Fax. Pounding at times, deeply abstract at others, it’s an album that has a great flow and should keep you engrossed throughout. When it gets groovy you can really hear that classic Stoll flavour and boy has he still got it. Looped up, cyclic, and frantic with a pure club feel. The ambient parts work well to temper the boundless energy of the rhythmic tracks and they gel together nicely.
