Lorenzo Bracaloni records ambient music under the name Fallen and folk and psychedelia as The Child of A Creek. He was born in the Italian province of Livorno in Italy’s famed Tuscany Region. It is a part of the world with centuries of history, and not surprisingly, its share of ghost stories. In nearby Siena, the Castiglioncello del Trinoro dates back to the 12th century. Locals insist that if you walk near enough to the church – which is now largely covered in vegetation – you can hear a lullaby sung quietly. According to local history, a group of revelers were singing “Balla Candelora!” and dancing on that spot, when the floor opened and swallowed them into a pit of fire. Ever since, their ghosts have sung its lyrics repeatedly. Bracaloni writes that his latest ambient work, When the Light Went Out, is “about hidden fears, scariest life events, bad dreams at night. “It’s about our human nature that, in [one] way or another, forces us to run the easier way taking all the well-known routes instead of going through the most tortuous and perhaps … more fruitful,” he writes in the album’s notes.“Edgar Allan Poe once said: ‘The scariest monsters are the ones that lurk within our souls,’ and I completely agree with him.” Despite that back story, and the album’s title, When the Light Went Out is not a dark recording. There’s plenty of atmosphere here, but for the most part it makes for an uplifting listen. His combination of ambient and new classical styles is more tender than gothic, more meditative than chilling. The title of the album’s major work, “Peaceful Words Mean Everything,” says a great deal about where he’s coming from.Bracaloni is impressively prolific, having delivered 11 discs between 2005 and 2019.
