Brave Timbers started as the solo project of multi-instrumentalist Sarah Kemp, member of Memory Drawings, Last Harbour, Lanterns On The Lake, Anna Kashfi and The Declining Winter and guest violinist on recording of Epic45, Library Tapes, Fieldhead and many others. Secret Hopes is a wonderful collection of exclusive new tracks in conjunction with reworked versions of tracks from the highly acclaimed Hope album which was released earlier this year. The new tracks were recorded during the Hope sessions, a really creatively intense and productive period for Brave Timbers, and were intended for this album but missed the cut late in the day. The reworked tracks came as a result of following an invitation from national Australian Radio ABC to do a couple of session tracks for a radio show. This invitation gave the duo the impetus to look again at a number of tracks trying something quite different, so they not only recorded two tracks for this radio session but finally reworked about half of the tracks of Hope album which they present on Secret Hopes. The minimal instrumental compositions of Secret Hopes largely fall into the realms of ambient, neo-classical and chamber folk. With an elegant arrangement and a sound palette that includes layers of ethereal violins, delicate piano, finger picked tenor guitar, warm harmonium swells and pizzicato strings, Secret Hopes is a relaxing album that carefully builds its wistful and pastoral mood. The mastering of Secret Hopes has been done by George Mastrokostas (aka Absent Without Leave), giving a deep majestic warmth to its sounds. Secret Hopes is a musical gem highly recommended for devotees of Rachel’s, Peter Broderick, Balmorhea and Dustin O’Halloran.
